Major Collaboration with outside parties

Collaboration with Computer Science

COMPAS system management and architecture has been guided by considerable advice and expertise from the San Diego Supercomputer (SDSC) for the ROCKS cluster operating system and CalIT2 for connections to the optiputer as well as a graduate student research project in computer science; besides being of great benefit to COMPAS, these collaborations have also provided important case-specific information to SDSC and CalIT2. In collaboration with the SDSC ROCKS group, the original COMPAS clusters and later a second cluster in the COMPAS facility performed a linpack benchmark test (criteria parallel linpack benchmark); which resulted in the COMPAS facility being designated as on of the top 500 world computer facilities. Although the current cluster is relatively modest in size by modern standards it is still a valuable resource.

Collaboration with Ocean and Atmospheric Science

Detlef Stammer has built in collaborations to the consortium for estimating the circulation and climate of the ocean (ECCO), including partners at MIT, JPL and, especially since Stammer has relocated there, the University of Hamburg. David Pierce and Tim Barnett have used COMPAS in working on collaborative climate modeling with NCAR scientists George Carr and Peter Thornton.
